Later in the game, if you get a lucky drop, you can craft a masthead that lets you give the boat some bursts of impulse power, allowing you to sail directly into the wind if needed. It takes some getting used to, but its logical in so far as you have to work with the wind and to a certain extent the waves.

Also try to keep a full stack of sticks, as they are used in most crafting recipes, and sometimes you might come across an island that DOESN'T have many sticks available, so you might find yourself suddenly running out.ĭancingjoker above has good notes on the sailing. Try to keep a full "stack" of both grass AND grass ropes on hand. On my first playthrough, I wasted so many resources building fires on the shore as needed, when instead I could just carry the fire with me.Īlso, when you first start, grab all the grass you can, and craft grass ropes.

+1 for putting a fire and drying rack on your boat as soon as it lets you. Sometime I notice that while I have my sail a bit slack, it's not in the best spot for the current wind, sometime if you tighten it up, it'll swing the sail around into a better position for the wind after you've changed direction. Just keep an eye out when the wave passes you, you'll drop fast and those obstacles can pop up quickly beneath you. The waves are tall and very visually obvious, if you can keep on the top of them you'll go a lot faster, and ride above some of the obstacles.

It's a lot easier to realize in the bits between chapters. I don't have a good way to describe this for open sailing, but pay attention to the direction they're moving and play around to see how you can use them to give a bit of a boost, especially going into the wind. It can be really easy to flip the boat doing this, and remember you can partially lower the sail if you're having trouble controlling your boat. Going perpendicular to the wind can get you going really fast, loosen up the sail partway so it's angled to the wind, and hold on and watch the waves. Keep a watch on things, as a tight sail can knock you over too. If you want to go somewhere against the wind, tighten up the sail and zig zag towards the destination, going at something around 45 degrees to the wind. But if you just try using video game logic, you might end up thinking rowing is faster instead of skipping across waves. The game has a pretty nice sailing system in it once you learn it.

Use a bow on the gloomwhatever lizards from a bit of a distance if you have trouble with their constant disappearing and killing you like I did.īiggest help is to look up some info on sailing. I tend to put a fire with drying rack on my boat so I'll always have one around to cook meat and cure leather.Īnimals react differently depending on how you attack them, seems that ranged attacks tend to send them running, but they'll fight you if you close in.
